Silk Worm

The Silkworm Division conducts research on tropical tasar silkworm improvement and sustainable sericulture. Its core activities include silkworm conservation, rearing and seed technology, pest and disease management.
The division also focuses on post-cocoon technologies, including cocoon processing, silk reeling, product development, and value addition. Research on the utilization of tasar sericulture by-products emphasizes the recovery of silk proteins, pupae, cocoon waste, peduncles, and host plant biomass for developing value-added products for biomedical, nutraceutical, cosmetic, aquafeed, and other industrial applications. Through research, technology transfer, and capacity building, the division promotes sustainable tasar sericulture, circular bioeconomy, and improved livelihoods for silk farmers.
